Whatever our flaws as a country, the American identity prevents us from serving a King.
I don’t call myself a patriot. I call myself an Earthling. I don’t identify with the country I was born into or with any country.
I believe that countries, lines that divide people, are an archaic and often deadly idea. We are one species, sustained by one biosphere, living on one planet.
So, when I point out that Americans, from the start, refused to bow to a King, I am not wearing red white and blue reciting a pledge with my hand over my heart. I am noting a historical and cultural fact.
This is a simple reality, a part of our history and culture and sociology that today, in these dark days of rampant domestic fascism, works in our favor. The foolish people who installed the Orange Clown King, they see themselves (wrongly) as armed sworn enemies of tyranny. In this critical moment, sadly, they are on the wrong side. They are the useful idiots protecting the tyrant.
In 2025, as the new tyrant goes on a rampage, MAGA are the loyalists, the new Tories. But it doesn’t much matter. Even in 1776, Americans weren’t fully united against tyranny—yet they defeated it.
