I have written about speaking plainly, directly, forcefully and without compromise to decision-makers about their failures, with a focus on demanding care for the Earth’s climate — especially at public events. Here’s a sample of what I have in mind.
I have a few things to say that go way beyond my personal concerns, and center on the anxieties of millions of ordinary Americans who you probably never hear from or think about. But you will be hearing from them soon.
Millions of us are unhappy. Politicians may not realize this and many do not care. We know that politicians — nearly all of them — accept money from large corporations, meet with their lobbyists and pass legislation to reward those donors.
We also know that this same integrated political and economic system — a public/private partnership — is united to serve its own interests, and is often hostile to the interests of the American people. We are aware that corporate-funded government does not listen to us.
At the same time, it’s true that many Americans genuinely support a corporate-friendly policy. They believe that corporations create jobs and that cutting their taxes stimulates growth and that this growth results in broader economic benefits for all of us.
