Ah, but it has! Gandhi’s satyagraha. Otpor’s resistence culture. Cesar Chavez and the grape boycotts. We’ve seen beautiful and effective resistance many times. But it can be very hard, not least because it can be hard to escape the justifiable rage we feel towards to brutality of our opponents. Hamas is on the right side politically. But I cannot excuse their violence any more than I excuse Netanyahu’s. Who’s more wrong? Netanyahu. But killing and violence are wrong even in a justifiable cause. And I wonder and honestly do not know—if they had the power, would Hamas kill all the Jews of Israel, or just the leadership and military forces aimed against them? Is the difference between these two sides a moral one? Or just the level of each side’s capacity to commit violence?
