It can be a harsh term, but it’s harsh towards foolishness, not people.

Recently, a commenter on one of my articles objected to the term Saners as an insulting term that limits the appeal of our movement. Some months back, I heard a different objection from an old friend that the term could be insensitive to clinically troubled people.

I was aware of both implications before choosing the label for our movement. I felt that any term with an emotional charge could be taken negatively. But, it seemed to me that our movement needed a provocative name.

I have not changed my mind. If our name inspires conversation and questions — well, that’s the intention.

Sadly, what The Saners propose isn’t even part of any noticeable public discussion yet. We need to break that barrier. We need to get noticed. We need disturb the quiet acceptance of the status quo.

Our somewhat provocative name is just a tiny part of that.
