You know, if something is wrong or dangerous, you just ditch it — okay?
How will concentration camp guards provide for their families if we do away with concentration camps? What about vendors who sell clothes made from cotton picked by slaves? Can we really afford to get rid of slavery?
These are absurd questions. So are today’s questions about getting rid of oil (“can’t be done”), or allowing markets to decide whether or not we can “afford” to preserve our planet from climate collapse. We must get rid of oil. We cannot choose to destroy the planet because it’s more profitable than saving it.
Are we really that stupid?
Does getting rid of oil present challenges? Does changing, altering or getting rid of a deadly economic system that is cooking the Earth pose challenges?
Yes. So, let’s MEET THE CHALLENGES!
How we address these issues reflects our actual values. If all we do is bellyache that change is hard — well, that means we don’t care enough about life or people or even our own children. If that’s our attitude, we will die miserably and will deserve to die miserably.
But I think we are better than that. At least most of us are. We DO in fact love our children. We don’t want to kill…
