Caring For Fossil Fuel Workers

To keep things simple, much of my thinking hasn’t yet been communicated. Here’s an important point that I rarely discuss publicly. Because it’s not (yet) timely. But the time will come.

You’ve probably heard me say that The Saners, our climate and society-improvement movement, has no real enemies. By this we mean that preventing climate collapse is in everyone’s interest. So, even the CEO of ExxonMobil benefits if we stop him from permanently making the Earth a barely habitable hellhole. He doesn’t actually want to live on that kind of planet.

But I’m not that worried about the bigwigs — executives, wealthy shareholders, etc.

I care more about people in the fossil fuel industries who do the real work. THEY are vulnerable and stand to lose everything if we succeed in ending fossil fuels. Except that we won’t let them suffer. WE will ensure that they do not end up in poverty, that their needs are met — including the needs of their families — because they will be heroes, and because they are good decent people.

Yes, some passionately support fossil fuels — which, you must admit makes sense as it relates to their immediate, short-term concerns—and others (more than you know) are worried sick about the climate crisis but need their jobs. It’s the job of The Saners to take care of both.
