I have often used Occupy as an (imperfect but inspiring) example of what can be done to rescue the climate. I believe there is a latent uncompromising movement to demand real climate action, similar to the way Occupy was with income inequality. I believe that this latent movement would be huge and unstoppable — if the people who feel this way were awoken to the fact that there are more than a billion people ready to take action. This is the implicit plan described in A Climate Declaration.
AdBusters has issued a press release and has begun promoting a program to force leaders to declare a climate emergency and act on it. Their words read very much like the text of A Climate Declaration.
It addresses world leaders, accuses them of gross negligence and demands the G20 leaders meet and declare a climate emergency. This is only the first demand, as part of a series of demands that will (presumably) require the end of fossil fuel use and whatever climate scientists say is needed to stabilize the Earth’s climate.
A Climate Declaration is NOT addressed to world leaders. It is addressed to the sane people of Earth and encourages them (us!) to remove the failed leaders and replace them with young climate activists. So, the AdBusters approach and A Climate Declaration are…
