Dogs are great role models for human beings. They love unconditionally, They have no artifice. Oh, and they are usually very, very sweet!
I, too, cannot understand the lack of human empathy that seems so common nowadays. I feel that empathy is very, very natural and that others—people with wealth and power and positions of authority—have worked hard to dampen empathy and replace it with greed, resentment and bigotry.
But they haven't succeeded as. much as it appear. First of all, the "pragmatists" (who are really not practical, just portrayed that way) have the microphone and their voices are amplified.
Those who act with kindness and empathy are either dismissed or gently praised as naive relics.
But that's nonsense. The vast majority of people in the world live their entire lives to ensure that their children lead good, and happy lives. In other words, most of the actions of people everywhere are motivated by love and empathy.
Do you doubt that? Do you love your own children? Do you believe that you are unique in that way? Or even rare?
As it happens, I don't even have children. But I am living my life—from now to the end—dedicated to ensuring that children everywhere have a habitable Earth to live on. And that humanity as a species becomes better and more humane.
We have a group—small but growing—dedicated to using methods pioneered by Gandhi and Martin Luther King to save the climate.
We call ourselves Saners because to destroy the planet you live on or to allow others to do that would be insane.
We demand an immediate worldwide emergency program, led by climate scientists, to end fossil fuels, end climate abuse and repair our planet.
We don't yet have the numbers to force the change that's needed. But a surprisingly modest number will do it. Movements by Gandhi and King both started very small.
What's the potential number of people who want to protect their children by protecting the Earth? A billion? Several billion?
In any case, I'm inviting anyone who is sane and cares to join us. See the website at WeAreSaners.org and, if you feel so inclined, sign up for the email list HERE.
