Fighting Climate Collapse Is Like Fighting the Great Depression and Hitler
We will stay positive, mutually supportive and determined. And we will have the guts to have fun.
My parents and their generation spoke about the Great Depression. “We were poor but happy,” they said. Maybe time softened their memories about a difficult time. But people DID help each other. They embraced life in the midst of difficulty.
During that period, there was a massive outburst of creativity in art and architecture and photography and more. To this day, beauty from that era remains — beautiful post offices, and works of art in our museums, and more continue to grace our world up to the current generation. These are gifts from the past.
It is with that spirit of mutual support, of faith in the future WE will create, and our determination to persevere that I want us to approach this current and ongoing struggle, this existential climate struggle. We cannot escape reality. Damage has been done, and the now necessary speedy end to fossil fuels will entail great pain. This is unavoidable.
The wider culture is one of weakness, fear, cowardice and anger. It is also one of unrealistic concepts and incompetence. We will reject that culture and establish our own — a culture suitable to meet the challenges we face. Others will choose to remain in…
