First of all, this is an excellent article, as ever. Showing the brutality and an astounding response to the brutality in a still photo is important. These kind of photos are typically suppressed allegedly out of respect for the victims.
I think showing the photos honors the victims by forcing the world to confront the brutality and challenge people to do something about it. During the Vietnam War, the news often showed how ugly, cruel and inhumane war really is. They showed dead soldiers and body bags. That’s one reason opposition was so fierce. And that this is not done today protects violent acts everywhere.
The horrifying video of the murder of George Floyd had a similar effect regarding police and racial violence. Again, these images are usually not shown—for fear that people will care and the guilty will be held accountable.
I am hoping for similar exposure to force authorities to face—and answer for—the climate crisis. Let’s see the real human cost in the starkest of terms.
Yes. Let us see. Let us see the brutality, the suffering of victims, and the inhumane joy on the faces of perpetrators. Whenever there is injustice, cruelty or dangerous stupidity, let’s shine a light. Sometimes, that just requires a single photo.
