I didn’t see Obergefell coming and was surprised when the system worked. I thought the system was completely broken and had promoted a different tactic.

People who follow me know that I oppose submission to any system that threatens the climate. Saving the Earth from becoming a hellhole planet that’s hostile to human life and other species — well, that’s more important than any government or economic system. That was and is my view. This isn’t ideological in any ordinary sense — I feel the same hostility towards China’s dictatorship as I do towards America’s plutocracy. I want people to evade or overrule destructive systems (but not physically harm the people who run those systems) and stop them through noncooperation, ridicule, and impeding “business as usual.”

And yet, there may be other ways that work.

Obergefell and Working Through the System

I am not focused on identity politics. But I support every group in the fight for equality, both under the law and culturally. To me, it seems like common sense. I’ve never stopped being amazed at the extent of hatred focused on gender, race, and ethnicity. And yet there it is.

In any case, I was always in favor of gay marriage but thought it would never be allowed…
