I agree that the Dyson Sphere is a bizarre and impractical idea. That said, people with expansive imaginations come up with many crazy ideas and are often wrong about things.
Such is the case with Dyson. Yet his was also wicked smart and—more important—as a person he was remarkably kind.
Please don’t judge a person solely by his shortcomings. I’m a passionate climate activist and Dyson—who certainly should have known better—thought the climate crisis was overblown.
Yes, he was wrong. But he was gracious, smart and kind. He never accused his fellow scientists of conspiracy or incompetence. He challenged their judgement…which is well within the rights of a true gentleman—which he was.
Yes, we must passionately fight for good ideas and against bad ones. But let’s also look at the whole person. :-)
