I don’t think anyone can predict the future. I’m pretty sure that I can’t.
But I have suspicions. Here’s my view of these upcoming elections.
1. Most presidential elections are a referendum on the incumbent but this one is a referendum on Trump. People are passionate about Trump—for or against—and rarely passionate about Biden.
2. Because the elections in which Trump were on the ballot were narrowly decided by a few thousand votes in swing states, we take every possible shift with any group—no matter how small—very seriously.
3. In the process, we underestimate or overlook the biggest shift of all—the votes of women after the repeal of Roe.
I feel that there is a very good chance that Trump will be routed, not by people who love Biden but by literally millions more women than pollsters or pundits expect turning out to vote to crush Trump and the GOP.
Biden will be the vehicle for their outrage and revenge, and the Democrats will tout this as a major victory. They will also tout their newfound control of the House and Senate.
The illusion of the popularity of the Democrats will be short-lived. Women will demand restoration and protection of their rights. They will demand the appointment of additional justices to the Supreme Court and a quick repeal of Dobbs. And they will demand the Equal Rights Amendment.
When the Democrats dither and make excuses (as they always do), women will become more formidable adversaries than the (now vanquished) GOP ever was.
Our jobs, as decent human beings, is to join these women, and fight for their rights against any foes in any party, pitting one party against another strategically to achieve justice.
