I favor EVERY POSSIBLE TACTIC, including the ones you support and the ones you say are less effective. So far, every tactic has been ineffective. We need to use every tool at our disposal and, when any specific tactic demonstrates a meaningful impact, double down on that one. Extinction Rebellion hasn’t gone big. If a whole bunch of refineries were set aflame, it would certainly catch people’s attention and make fossil fuel investors wonder if their investments weren’t too risky. It would also generate a fierce response from fossil fuel profiteers and advocates.

I have no idea what the overall outcome would be. Nor does anyone. Surely, a general strike would have a major impact—but making that happen seems unlikely at the moment. That could change.

In any case, I think we shouldn’t remove any tools from our tool box. In my view, there would never have been much civil rights legislation if we only had Martin Luther King and no Black Panthers or Malcom X. Both measured actions and those with the gloves off may be necessary. The status quo won’t move unless it is frightened.
