I just was the final performance of The Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway . I’ve been wanting to see this show since I was a teenager—and I’m old now.
It was an all black cast. The show is a dark comedy about the human condition. This show was mind bogglingly brilliant. I think white audiences see an all black cast in a play about the human condition makes some small progress in seeing that the “human condition” is all of us.
Not just an intellectual understanding, but a visceral one.
I believe the arts and all forms of storytelling are exceedingly important, not just fun and entertainment. (Nothing wrong with fun and entertainment, but it’s bigger than that.)
So, yeah—let’s stop having the lead character always be white.
