I knew David Sedaris—albeit not well—in Raleigh NC in the 1970s. We were both involved in the community theatre. He was shy and a bit funny looking—I think he had braces—but clearly a nice guy. I had no idea he could write. But he looked a bit lost at theatre parties so I chatted with him to make him more comfortable.
He wrote about those days in his book Naked in a chapter called The Drama Bug. (I think that’s the chapter title.) The people he writes about are mostly composites (except for the director who is a specific real person). I’m in there—kind of.
His description of people and events is fairly accurate, even with the snarky tone. To me, it isn’t uproariously funny, but subtly humorous slightly altered nonfiction. He’s a nice guy and very talented. I’m not a fan, but I do enjoy much of his work.
