I remember this differently. I favored Netscape and hated IE. I was one of the first web developers in Philly. Microsoft was arrogant and didn’t support capabilities that I wanted. Netscape was expandable—it accepted plugins. I thought of Netscape as the free successor to Mozilla. I don’t remember being charged for Netscape.
Most clients used the hated AOL browser—which made everything look terrible.
To this day, I favor the non-commercial browsers. I like Firefox and hate Chrome, won’t use Edge. Intrigued by Arc, though.
