I think it's foolish to make reckless accusations about people. I'm pretty confident you are sincere. Most people are. I also think you are smart—that shows in your writing.
But I believe you are mistaken.
We have 15,000 climate scientists who have worked seriously and carefully for decades, dedicating their lives to this situation. Most have come to the conclusion that our species must slash C02 emissions or suffer increasingly deadly consequences.
We are all seeing those consequences NOW, and this is just a foretaste of what's coming.
I also agree that our economy, as currently organized, is very dependent on cheap energy. But renewable energy is already cheap and getting cheaper. Fossil fuels are more and more difficult and expensive to extract.
But, even if fossil fuels were cheaper, would it make any sense to DESTROY THE CLIMATE and create ever increasing suffering and death all for the benefit of this economy? Do we care about money but not life?
If so, our species does not deserve to survive. But we have no right to kill the other species that share this planet with us.
My view is that we should make the changes recommended by climate scientists. Unfortunately, "leaders" will continue leading us to oblivion, in accordance with the rules, laws and (unconscionable) values of this unsustainable "civilization."
So we will need to defy the rules to protect the Earth and ensure that our children inherit a habitable planet.
Toward that end, I suggest that those who care and are ready to act join with US.
