If Right Wing Christians Think Their Beliefs are More Heartfelt Than Mine, They Are Sadly Mistaken

I’ve had self-identified “Christians” call my comments about the MAGA version of Jesus “ignorant” and “disrespectful.” But I disagree. Even as a non-religious person, I think it’s blasphemy that’s disrespectful. Lying about a religion and attributing those lies to that religion — well, that’s disrespectful. And ignorant.

I don’t like to attack people personally, though. I think we need to humanize everyone, and respect everyone warts and all. But we don’t need to respect the warts.

In any case, the point of this article is to talk about a double-standard that should never be upheld, and that’s the idea that a person’s views are more worthy of respect and have more moral force if they are attributed to that person’s religion.

The most visible aspect of this notion today is that right-wingers who misrepresent the teachings of Jesus should expect everyone to defer to their bigotry and hatred and bullying that they insist are blessed by Him.
