I’m Not Trying to Persuade Anyone About the Climate Crisis

There’s no point in arguing with me!

You may believe that the climate crisis isn’t real. Or that it’s not urgent. Or that it must take a back seat to other issues. You may think you know more than the climate scientists or that the climate scientists are actually saying it’s not that bad.

You can believe anything you want. I’m fine with that. I don’t want to persuade you of anything. I think persuasion is a waste of time. People don’t often change their minds.

In any case, since the climate crisis is real and urgent, we don’t have time to change people’s minds. I’m pretty sure that billions of us already understand the climate crisis is real and urgent and that, if we don’t listen to the scientists and act to slash C02 emissions and do other things they recommend, we’re toast.

Those are the people I want to reach. The people who already agree. We don’t need everyone! Unanimity has never been required (or achieved) in history to make changes. Most revolutions begin with maybe 2–4% of the relevant populations. In the case of the climate crisis, our potential group of change-makers is much, much bigger.

If you are a denier or delayer or whatever, don’t be insulted. I don’t hate you. I think you are being foolish. Everyone is foolish at times. I’m…
