An old (and wise) adage says we are always fighting the previous war. This adage is useful right now as people are obsessing about “the economy,” dutifully following the “thought leaders.”
Let’s remember that the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” dates back to 1992 and the Clinton Administration. That’s a long time ago. Yet, politicians and media are whining loudly about inflation. And gas prices.
Well, it’s obvious and soon will be even more obvious that our biggest problem isn’t inflation or the economy. It’s the climate, stupid.
I’ve written about the upcoming Summer of Fire, a very possible event that (sooner or later) will change our focus as the Earth “speaks up” and demands our attention. Apparently, the fact that each year we see more deadly heatwaves, storms and wildfires hasn’t yet really registered. The fact that we are destroying the habitability of the Earth, as scientists warned us we would if we continued burning fossil fuels, is barely a blip in the news cycle.
Reality cannot be denied forever.
Yes, politicians and media and everyone who profits handsomely from the fossil fuel economy want you to think about ANYTHING but the climate. If you focus on inflation, something that hurts them more than you, that’s ideal for them. Yes! Please help the wealthy preserve their undeserved…
