Member-only story
Last year, I wrote to Joe Biden (and others) about the climate crisis. I told the President that I voted for the Biden/Harris ticket in 2020 and expected to do so again in 2024.
But, I also wanted him to know why and how I would be working hard to go much further to fix the climate than he—or any politician—ever would or could.
I told him about The Saners (our movement to prevent climate collapse and fix the fundamental flaws of our modern civilization), about how we all know that politics is awash in oil money, and how—within the existing political and economic system rules—we would be doomed by merely supporting any administration.
Biden—even his PR apparatus—didn’t write back. Instead, I got a letter from Harris’ staff with boilerplate paragraphs explaining the administration’s policy and dedication to addressing the climate crisis.
Even Good People Can’t Always Do What’s Best
I believe that most people are generally good—or at least have a latent capacity for goodness. I think that about many people who fell short of what, I believe, decency required of them. But many offices, positions and roles in our society put a sharp limit on decency.
