Right wing ideologues want us to lie to children to ensure that their hatred consumes the next generation. They will fail.
A Washington Post article documents how teachers are being forced to squelch the truth and deceive their students by distorting reality to fit a right-wing political agenda.
One teacher was told she could not say “slavery was wrong” because that substitutes her opinion for facts. At least according the (Orwellian) Education “Authorities” from Fairfield Community School District in the not-very-great State of Iowa. (My opinion).
The teacher — wisely — quit the teaching profession at the end of the year. Or, more accurately, the teaching profession ceased to exist in the State of Iowa.
In North Carolina, a teacher was reprimanded for allowing children to read excerpts from Christopher Columbus’ journals, documenting his abuse of Native Americans. He was told that white children were feeling guilty due to those words. The teacher wrote back to an aggrieved parent asking: “Why would your child feel guilty about what Columbus did to the Arawak?”
It’s pretty difficult to argue that what this teacher was teaching wasn’t facts. But these facts were making parents and officials of the school district unhappy. The teacher was reprimanded and left her job, moving to a school district that would allow…
