Maybe we need to go a step further and stop focusing on beauty. I mean, there are so many other more significant attractive qualities.
As for the standard of beauty, I suspect that beyond cultural stereotypes, evolution has made people tend to see perfect symmetry as more beautiful than asymmetry—because the latter might correlate somewhat with genetic imperfection and mates with less reproductive capacity.
But why should modern people endorse bad ideas—whether they originate with people or Nature?
In modern civilization, people can get angry without killing. We can get aroused without raping. Indeed, placing human values above bad tendencies—whether natural or cultural—is one of the best reasons to have civilization.
