It’s not any of the mistakes of which we’ve been accused.
Our leaders always have excuses and “we, the people” are always guilty. How many of these charges against ordinary people — you know, against us, the faceless masses — have you heard?
- We have ruined the economy because we spend too much (depleting savings and investment) or too little (causing recessions and eliminating jobs).
- We choose the wrong leaders or simply don’t vote.
- We don’t work hard enough (we are lazy and entitled) and we choose the wrong careers. We want too much money for our work.
- We don’t get a good education. Or if we do go to college (as we are told to do) we choose the wrong majors and take on too much debt. We want forgiveness for our debt (free stuff) but should just pay it off, or not borrow, or earn enough to pay it off.
There’s a common thread here: We are in charge of nothing and responsible for everything.
What We Are Accused of Is Simply Doing What We Are Told
We are exhorted to go to college — and to spend AND save. We are exhorted to get an education AND just pay off the debt because if you can’t find a high-paying job to do that, this is YOUR fault. Today, we are told the climate…
