Moving Ahead Even When Discouraged

Yes, I have my moods. But I never waver and I never give up. What we are doing is too important.

So, I returned from a vacation a few days ago, not refreshed. Actually exhausted. I’d hoped that the change of scenery would stimulate new ideas, energize me, and inspire me.

That didn’t happen. I feel tired, kind of confused, and a bit discouraged.

Over the last year, I’d set out a challenging task for myself: to trigger the actions that would save the Earth from climate collapse. Ok. I know, I know. That sounds grandiose, incredible, foolish…and especially, impossible.

I’m nobody special. I’m ordinary. Such things might be possible for certain people: Gandhi, for example. Or Martin Luther King. But I’m not anywhere near in their league.

On the other hand, some relatively ordinary people have founded and guided successful movements. Lech Walesa was an electrician — and his group ousted the dictator of Poland and established an elective government. Five college students founded Otpor — the movement that ousted the dictator of Serbia and established an elective government in their country.

Well, even those relatively ordinary people are still head and shoulders above me. But I have something that they didn’t have. I have their example and the lessons learned from
