Musk is both smart and stupid. This is common for wealthy people. Wealthy people, because they've had success, they believe they are geniuses—and others sometimes share those beliefs.

Being obeyed and treated like a genius makes people stupid. They think they can do no wrong. They think every one of their successes is due to their genius.

Most of Musk's companies have had some impressive accomplishments. My guess is that in those cases he hired talented people and gave them enough room to do good work. He didn't impede them by imposing his amateur ideas. After all, Musk is NOT a rocket scientist or an automotive engineers.

In the case of Twitter, Musk DID interfere severely and disastrously. The consequences are clear. If he'd been more hands off, the outcome could have been better. But Musk wanted his way, and now he's gotten it.
