We are told that debate is healthy. That we need to talk to each other. We are told that this approach would be sensible as a way for reasonable people of good will to interact, to work out their differences, to find a way forward. But there is a large number of people NOT of good will. They are a minority but they hold the positions of authority and power.
These unreasonable people want to block any sensible or humane action. They want to prevent the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. They want gun proliferation. They don’t recognize a common humanity that we all share. They want their team to win.
And when we “debate” them, they win. We talk and this delays action. We work within the rules of a system that favors a cruel minority. The majority rejected George W. Bush in favor of Al Gore. We chose a man obsessed with protecting the climate, but the Supreme Court overruled us and put a fossil fuel profiteer into the White House. We chose Hillary Clinton but our system is so flawed, the rules so unjust, that it put a cruel stupid old fraud into the White House.
We fail to call out the Big Lie, the lie that we have representative government when, in fact, our system is awash in corporate money. Politicians and legislation are purchased and policies are geared to favor the undeserving rich.
