They can shoot at masses of protesters. But if people don’t do their work, or work slow, or “make mistakes”—well, dictators snd CEOS can’t extract oil or fight wars. Nonviolent noncooperation is the Achilles heel of all thugs. The protests, the lawsuits, the attempts to persuade or shame—or simply vote? That’s playing to the strengths of those fools.

Withdrawing our support in stages, in a series of escalating tactics? That’s how Milosevic was defeated, how Ceaușescu was defeated, how the Shah was defeated. That’s how the Soviet Empire was dismembered.
