And the arsonists who live here, throwing gasoline on the fire in their units, are not exercising their rights. They are criminals and a danger to us all.
We all live together. On top of each other. Side-by-side. Sometimes in the same units. Always in the same building. We share the Earth.
And not just with other humans. Also with insects, animals, plants, microbes and a wealth of complex and interdependent living and non-living components. Our complex is getting crowded with more of us crowding out and destroying the habitats of our companions.
We don’t recognize our companions, though. They are all just resources to be exploited as we continue to multiply and take more and more. We have upset the balance of Nature, and can see the damage, but we have not stopped. We continue. We make excuses. We ignore what’s in front of our faces.
We ignore what is becoming more and more impossible to ignore. We cannot continue like this.
We always hear how the situation is complex, and we must balance what people are willing to do, what’s politically expedient and what’s economically sensible. What is considered doable always falls far short of what is necessary.
But we know the situation. We must change or die. And we have not even begun to change. Not really. We sometimes…
