People sometimes care about things other than “the economy.” Sometimes they care about other things a whole lot more than the economy. I think most prognosticators do not really understand this and take it into account.

For example, the desire to stop a violent despot from abusing a whole country can be a strong one. People actually have a sense of right and wrong and will even do the right thing even when they are warned it is impractical.
