Remember the Pundits and Polls Predicted a “Red Wave” in 2022?
Well, I do. And they say Trump is leading now and will be difficult to beat. Maybe. Maybe not.
There was hardly any debate at all. In 2022, the GOP was ascendant and everyone expected a Red Wave — a blowout at the polls putting the GOP firmly in power everywhere except the White House. The White House would need to wait for 2024.
But the conventional wisdom was wrong. I always say, if it’s conventional, it ain’t wisdom. Traditionally, the party out of power gains in off-year elections. But 2022 defied those expectations. The polls and pundits were wrong.
Nobody seems to remember that in 2024.
Fool me twice? I don’t think so.
I’m not saying that Biden will win or that the polls are wrong now — but we have no reason to give them more credence than we did in 2022. Like highly financial analysts, who tell you after the fact why the market went up or down yesterday, “predicting” and explaining the past is simple. There’s a corollary: predicting an election, getting it wrong and making sure everybody forgets and takes your next prediction serious is EASIER.
