What to do about and with the people who are destroying the planet.
I’ve written to Joe Manchin and Charles Koch and other people who are doing terrible things to our climate. I was thinking — these are human beings who have loved ones, including grandchildren. Even though they are old, they have a stake in the future.
They are acting out of unenlightened self-interest. But even if you are greedy, if you love your grandchildren, you should protect — not destroy — the habitability of the Earth. The Earth of your own grandchildren and future generations beyond them.
I used this appeal in my letters. In some cases, I named their young loved ones. I asked: when you are gone, and the climate is collapsing around them, and they KNOW you were one of the primary promoters of fossil fuels, what will they think of you? Won’t they resent you? HATE you?
Shouldn’t they? Because YOU knew better? And CHOSE greed over love?
These letters had no effect. I have no way of knowing if Manchin and Koch (and others) even read these letters.
