The Arab Spring wasn’t powered by armed resistance. It was much smarter than that. Most leaders and participants in the Arab Spring knew that they couldn’t overthrow Mubarak or Zine El Abidine Ben Ali by outgunning them. Governments nearly always have the advantage in an armed battle against citizens.

No, the successes of the Arab Spring were driven by something far more powerful than hatred and violence. They were driven by love.

They were fighting for freedom and each other. That explains the Egyptian Moslems who surrounded and protected Coptic Christians from violence during the uprising. That explains why the uprising had so much popular support. People loved their children and life and each other too much to allow them to live under a brutal dictator. They would not cooperate with evil and thus weakened it—in some cases to the point of collapse.

They were acting like Gandhi and King—not an angry mob. Sadly, they declared victory too soon, which is why Mubarak was succeeded by another dictator.

We will need another movement powered by love to save our planet from climate abuse. We have that movement. It’s new and small but that will change. We need more people who care, who love life, love Nature, love their children enough to ACT.

We need people who recognize the obvious—that it’s literally insane to destroy the planet we all live on. And insane to support, obey or serve those who are responsible for that destruction. We can and must do better.
