The Birth of Actual Civilization

We tell ourselves a story about conquering Nature and each other and call those atrocities “civilization.” But our way of existence is not civilized.

Our religions, which we defy with impudence choosing instead to chant the names of our deity and embrace cruelty and selfishness as our sacred rights, generally center on sensible ideas. For example, Christianity preaches: Love one another. Love your enemies! Be kind to foreigners and strangers.

We virtually never even say the nice parts out loud. Instead, we search for passages to justify our cruel stupidity — phrases like “those who do not work shall not eat.”

And so we kill each other and trash the planet we all live on with a smug self-satisfaction, actually imagining that the Creator of the Universe endorses our barbaric idiocy.

No matter how hard I squint, I’m not seeing any saints in the Middle East nowadays. Not in Gaza. Not in Israel. And not in the other nations of the region. Or the world.

And the nations of the world, the governments, the gigantic international corporations, the groups and individuals who make the decisions — they run a system that abuses humans and animals and Nature. They have failed dismally not only to protect our common home, our lovely Earth, but have enforced an truly abusive system.
