Naturally, the corporate-funded and controlled state will reverse this ruling — but the exposure is priceless
Attempts by governments and the corporations that effectively own them, attempts to destroy the planet we all live on for profit, is LITERALLY insane. This is no less insane than a person insisting he IS Napoleon and demanding that the shirt with long sleeves tied in the back to restrain him be removed.
But the sane people in Montana won their case. The sane ones here are the children and the adults who are assisting them. They are the victors in Held vs. the State of Montana. They are 16 young people — the oldest being Rikki Held, 22 — and most are teenagers or younger.
The State Constitution explicitly guarantees a “clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.” The judge ruled that the State violated the Constitution by approving fossil fuel projects without taking the environmental effects into account.
I admit, I was surprised by this ruling. I feel certain that, on appeal, this ruling will ultimately be overruled or otherwise rendered ineffectual. But it IS a very important ruling because it puts the spotlight on selfish, foolish and greedy actions and on the victims of that foolishness.
