The Double-Edged Sword of Nuclear Power

My politics (at least as you would see it) is on the left and I’m dubious (at best) about how our economic system operates today, with politicians swimming in corporate money. But when Macron beat LePen (twice!), I cheered: “Yay! The investment banker won!”

The French president made his fortune as a banker working on mergers and acquisitions and, you could fairly say, represents much of what I believe is fundamentally wrong in the world. But he’s not a fascist.

Admittedly, cheering Macron as if he’s a hero is a bit over the top, but when the alternative is so horrific, you compromise. Remember, the United States fought along side Stalin to defeat Hitler. That was unpleasant, but not a strategic mistake.

And so we look at the climate crisis and nuclear power.

Nuclear power works with dangerous radioactive substances. There have been repeated accidents with only those that got out of control making their way into the public consciousness. So, in some ways, those accidents look rare.

It was similar during the Cold War. Many people know about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Few know about the many accidents with nuclear bombs, often on American soil, because luckily none of them went off.
