The future is not predetermined. I would not call myself an optimist but success is possible and has been achieved many times against seemingly impossible odds. I’ve spent quite a bit of time studying history and movements.

I know that nonviolent noncooperation is a challenging strategy. Some succeed and sine fail. But it is well within the realm of possibilities even for ordinary people. We think of extraordinary movement leaders—usually Gandhi or King. But most successful movements were founded and led by very ordinary people. Cesar Chavez had an elementary school education and was not a charismatic speaker. 5 ordinary college students founded Otpor! and in 3 years ousted Serbian dictator Milosevic, replacing his regime with a representative government—without firing a shot.

Guaranteed success? No, but a real possibility of success. We have a moral obligation to make the effort—the future of the Earth and everyone on it depends on US making that effort.
