The "people in power" and especially the systems behind them (plutocracy, corporatism, etc.) are powerless without our active support. All we need to do is call this bluff, withdraw our support and LET THEM DO THE WORK FOR THEMSELVES.
They can't. They have neither the inclination, nor ability. Furthermore, most of the "work" is useless crap that results in defiling the planet for the personal profit of an undeserving few.
