Is this a good idea for The Saners? Would the time to start this band be NOW?
Srdja Popovic, the more visible of the invisible 5 college students who founded the activist group Otpor and overthrew the Serbian dictator Milosevic, was a bass player. I believe his passion for music was a key factor in the movement’s success.
You see Otpor wasn’t simply a resistance group — it was also a cultural force. Otpor was a group that produced and promoted music and art and street theatre. In the main square of the capital, there would be be free concerts, and it was the place to be, even if you didn’t pay attention to politics.
Revolutionary Serbia built a sense of community and excitement and creativity. This energy effectively countered the fear and defeatism that previously allowed the dictator to control the country. The dictator ultimately lost control and the people of Serbia now have an elective government.
Freedom and justice rocks!
Maybe our group that seeks to repair the Earth and establish a humane society worldwide needs a band, too. Unlike Otpor, we do not occupy the same region. We are all over the planet. Our band may need to collaborate remotely and digitally. But we can make music. We can be from every background, any country, all generations. We can express the depths of what…
