In the future, people will scarcely believe that we lived and behaved as we did.

Daddy’s telling his silly stories again.

He says that long ago, when he was my age, people hated and even killed each other over stupid things. They did this even over things that didn’t really exist. They often killed over something called “money.”

Daddy says money was a symbol of stuff that you could own, that you could keep for yourself. And, even if someone else really needed that stuff to stay alive— food or medicine or something else real — and you didn’t need it, you could still keep it.

And you WOULD keep it, because that was considered fair. I’m eight and I know that’s just stupid. Daddy makes up silly stories.

Daddy says that when he was little the skies were often clear and sunny and that storms and floods and droughts and heatwaves didn’t happen every day. He says their were lots of green plants and colorful flowers. He says there were many kinds of living creatures, animals. Not just a few such creatures. Not just a bird or two. Or a lizard. But many different kinds of animals, and large numbers of them.

He says people killed them off. He says they killed off the plants and flowers, too. That’s silly. There aren’t so many people and the planet is very, very big. How would we kill them all? And why…
