There are a wide range of strategies for trying to stop climate catastrophe. Given the very limited time left, slow incremental steps are not a viable approach. 20-30 years ago, sure.

We need to sharply cut the use of fossil fuels now. Not negotiate, not announce new plans and targets.

Climate is simply physics and chemistry. It doesn’t respond to our arguments. Either we stop burning fossil fuels or bear the consequences.

Is this spreading fear? Would a different approach fix things?

I don’t know. Throughout the world, different people and groups have tried different things.

Nothing has worked. Yet.

I support everyone trying any strategy because I don’t know what works and we can’t afford to stop trying.

We are making no progress because across the world, decision makers—political and business leaders—want to keep burning fossil fuels.

You and I would act differently. But we don’t decide.

I write to these people and ask them to think about their children and grandchildren. To remind them that they are destroying the habitability of the planet they will struggle to survive on. And they will all know who made the decision to keep burning fossil fuels.

My strategy may not work. I think it’s the best I can do and if I’m very fortunate, I’ll have a positive impact.

There are others with more extreme tactics than mine. They want to sabotage fossil fuel infrastructure—make oil a risky and unprofitable investment—to save our climate.

I support every approach and hope that one—any of them—works.

I’m not interested in fear or hope. I will cheer results when and if they come. Bug if they do, those results will come from efforts—not walking on eggshells.
