There is a lot that is obvious to working people that is overlooked in this essay. The biggest, of course, is that people don't want to go to the office:

1. Because commuting is a drag and

2. The boss is always interfering and driving employees crazy.

So, I don't think the office is the future of work. I think the biggest change in work is that 90% of it will disappear entirely and nobody will miss it. That's because 90% of work (and I may be underestimating) is useless or WORSE THAN USELESS, it's destructive to the planet and a waste of human life.

We produce mountains of crap when what we really need is healthy food, medicine, shelter and a few other necessities. Everything else is a mistake.

The economy is an abstraction and we invented the idea that people must work for plutocrats, or dictators or a Communist Party to eat and to live. We made up the idea of money.

It's all been a bad idea. It's a lie we keep telling ourselves and we believe it and it's so deeply embedded in our thinking that we cannot imagine life any other way.

But the life our civilization has chosen is not only a nightmare for billions of human beings—who waste their short precious lives exhausting themselves and marking time in cubicles and factories—but work produces endless gigatons of CO2 emissions which is turning the Earth into an uninhabitable hellhole.

There is an alternative and there is a way to get there. But it requires imagination and courage. However, since the current civilization is destroying itself—it cannot survive the unnatural disasters it has unleashed—we can and must take the necessary steps to save the Earth, and to free human beings to BE human beings and not mere human resources.

WE HAVE BEGUN. We are The Saners—people who recognize that to knowingly ruin the planet we all live on is literally insane.
