There is really no other reason to communicate with people about the climate. So, who should we communicate with and what’s our message? What do we want to happen?
We communicate with people who are most likely to take action once they know what to do and believe it can make a difference.
People who understand that this IS an existential crisis, that it is here NOW, and who care deeply and want to fix things. But these same people are discouraged and overwhelmed. They feel powerless and alone.
This is ironic because there are at least a billion such people worldwide—possibly several billion. They feel alone (and powerless) in part because they are invisible. They are silent in their despair so we believe that nobody cares (except “me”).
My personal mission for climate communication is twofold:
1. Awaken this silent, invisible billion+ to each other, to their huge numbers, and their tremendous unrealized potential to change the world;
2. Motivate them to act, in open defiance of leaders and systems, in passion Al visible and unrelenting action to protect the future of their children and Nature herself; and to supply some concrete meaningful actions to start this unstoppable movement.
I favor ALL sincere climate efforts, from the Sunrise Movement (working to reform the system from within) to Andreas Malm who promotes sabotage of fossil fuel infrastructure to make “business as usual” impossible.
I favor all efforts because I don’t know which will succeed.
That said, I believe in my approach and have been working to make it happen. And I’ll never stop.
