The actual amendment protects gun ownership specifically in the context of a well regulated militia. It was designed to enable the states to quickly assemble a fighting force for a new country which had a standing army of only 800 soldiers.

The original reason for the amendment no longer exists.

Ironically, the so-called originalists are the ones who decided to ignore the reference to a well-regulated militia and the original context and purpose of the amendment.
