This is beautiful. I think of the Czech students who put flowers in the barrels of invading Russians guns in 1968. The Russian soldiers were young men who were sent to Prague to invade. They barely knew where they were. They shot into the art museum, thinking it was a government building.
Most of our “enemies” are fools, not rogues. We should behave accordingly. You certainly did. There is an urgency to stop dangerous behavior while not attacking (merely mistaken) people.
