To take meaningful action on the ozone problem, nobody said—hey, there's nothing we can do as long as people demand Freon for air conditioners and aerosols for hairspray. Instead, they took serious meaningful action, ending the production of the offending products and replacing them with safer alternative.
We could and should have started doing this in 1988 at the latest, when NASA scientists publicly warned Congress of the issue and what steps were necessary. Instead, both industry and government worked to INCREASE fossil fuel use and C02 emissions.
The obvious situation is that leaders worldwide, in both industry and government have failed consistently and continue to do so. This may be the intention but the reason doesn't matter. We must disobey and overwhelm these failed leaders along with the failed systems and processes and norms that allow and even encourage the destruction of our climate.
Some of us have begun taking action and we have confidence that our movement will grow and become a true force for the changes that are needed.
We are Saners—people who understand that it's insane to destroy the planet you live on, or to cooperate with people who are committing such crazy actions. We have a plan, based on the proven principles of satyagraha—which Gandhi used to oust the British from India.
