Umair is mostly right. The phenomena that he describes are real and significant. However, on the larger point, he's mistaken.
There IS a revolt. Or will be. The revolutionaries are out there—angry, worried, scared, AND READY TO ACT.
But they don't—yet. For several reasons:
1. People are tired and distracted. Young people are distracted as described by Umair. And adults are exhausted from work and other demands on them; and they are emotionally exhausted.
2. They feel alone. Literally billions of people are ready to do whatever is necessary to grind this world to a halt and change everything. Because 3 billion people are under 30 and most can see that THEY HAVE NO FUTURE. And their parents love them and will enthusiastically join any revolution that starts. But everyone thinks, there is no revolution; "I'm the only one who care." They see the world as Umair does—everyone's unaware, distracted or whatever. And only one person cares—me. There are literally BILLIONS of latent revolutionaries. Most of Umair's 200+K followers are among them.
3. They don't know what to do. People see that some efforts are being made and they don't work. If voting doesn't work and protest doesn't work, what's left? That's the way these multi-billion silent revolutionaries see things right now.
How does this change? It changes the way change always happens. A handful of stubborn and determined people show the billions that they aren't alone, that there ARE actions to take, and that the status quo isn't all-powerful—that it's very, very vulnerable.
That's what I've begun to do. I'm sure there are other efforts like mine. Once these billions of people see that there are REAL OPTIONS, and ways to save their own children (and themselves), they will join in.
My group is still working out tactics, but we begin by establishing our identity—we are SANERS, because to destroy the planet you live on (or allow others to do that) is literally insane. And we have a specific demand, a demand that we will repeat and spread and post on lamp posts and wear on T-Shirts and buttons and make ubiquitous:
We demand an immediate worldwide emergency program, led by climate scientists, to end fossil fuels, end climate abuse and repair our planet.
You are invited to join our group, to being making noise, to start the worldwide change—in the spirit of Gandhi and King and others. We will not only end climate abuse — we will change our values and behaviors so that human beings will largely be guided by the better angels of our Nature — not greed, not hatred, not bigotry. Billions of us are tired of all that; we’re done with that.
