Whether you’re pleased with yourself or disappointed — or something in between — here’s something to remember. You can be better than this. And you should try.
Each of us has a short time on this Earth. Like it or not, whatever our situations, we all share the common fate and — at the most basic level — the common experience of humanity. Those horrible people who do terrible things — people you hate — are fundamentally no different than you.
Hell, they ARE you. We all need to see this and to feel this at the deepest level. Because it’s true and when we deny our common humanity, we’ve drifted off into a dream world. And when we lose touch with reality, we are bound to become foolish, even dangerous. We can become worse than those people we hate, without even seeing it.
IT’S NOT EASY
Look, I’m not saying this is easy. There’s plenty to be angry about. I’m not that great at this myself. In fact, I’m writing this as much for myself as for you.
I get angry and my judgement becomes clouded and I say stupid things. Sometimes I do stupid things. This isn’t my most common behavior — I’m generally kind. And at my worst, well, I do little significant damage. I have little influence in this world. So far.
