We Don’t Have Time — For Democratic Action to Preserve the Climate

While I applaud the efforts of Ingmar Rentzhog and fervently hope his climate efforts succeed, I think he places too much faith in the political system.

We have to do this through the democratic process. That’s what I’m being told by some climate activists, people I admire. But I still disagree with them.

We don’t have time. This is the name of a group co-founded and headed by Ingmar Rentzhog. His manifesto, which was published here on Medium in 2018 sounds similar to A Climate Declaration. Similar, but not the same.

He has created a social media app with the intention of mobilizing people to put pressure on political leaders to take positive action to protect the climate. This is a good idea and a laudable approach.

It may or may not work. Which is also true of my (embryonic) efforts centered on A Climate Declaration. I’m rooting for him but I can’t put my faith in any existing efforts. I believe we need to do MORE and my plans are, I think, clearer in pointing out a path (albeit a challenging one) to truly FORCING ACTION.

Mr. Rentzhog has absolutely made important contributions. Some credit him for bringing Greta Thunberg and her lonely protest in front of the Swedish Parlament to the attention of the world. He was selected and…
